Abstract:
As part of the NEUTRON joint project, alternative joining processes for thermoset fiber composite structures were investigated. The focus of the applied processes was on the possibility of dust-free assembly, autoclave-free joining, and resource-efficient implementation. This publication presents initial results on the investigated joining technologies: resistance welding (RW), resistance interdiffusion joining (RIDJ), and assembly interdiffusion joining (AIDJ) at the coupon level. The processes were compared based on the applied process cycles, cross-section, tensile shear strength, and fracture surface investigations, and are intended to provide an initial assessment of their applicability and potential. Furthermore, the application of the AIDJ process for the assembly of a helicopter engine deck structural demonstrator is described.
