Abstract:
Cyclone cooling is a promising cooling method for technical applications with highly thermally stressed components such as the turbine blades in the first stages of a high-pressure turbine. In this work, cyclone cooling for use in turbine blades is investigated numerically using 3D RANS and DES simulations. The swirl flow in the cooling channel is generated using newly defined axial guide vanes. The cooling channel is modeled as a straight tube. In addition to the conventional configuration with a single axial guide vane at the turbine blade root, the arrangement of several guide vanes connected in series is also investigated. In a parameter study, the deflection angle and the hub ratio are varied for two fundamentally different guide vane geometries. One setup with a single guide vane and one setup with multiple guide vanes are investigated at an increased level of detail using a DES simulation. The flow simulations are validated using a reference experiment from the literature. The influence of turbulence modeling on the accuracy of the simulation results is investigated in detail. With the geometries presented in this study, an increase in the Nusselt number of 2.5 to 4.6 can be achieved compared to purely axial turbulent pipe flow. This is associated with an increase in pressure drop by a factor of 15 to 155. By installing multiple guide vanes in the cooling channel, significantly more homogeneous heat transfer and a pressure drop reduction of up to 17% can be achieved compared to conventional configurations. The knowledge gained from this work supports future design processes for guide vanes for cyclone cooling applications and contributes to the understanding of the complex flow field in the swirl channel and its simulation.
