Abstract:
Interval hot pressing is a highly efficient process for the production of virtually endless thermoplastic profiles. Despite its unique capabilities and outstanding process stability, its widespread adoption has been hampered, in part, by the limited insight into the processes within the press tool. One of the most successful approaches to modeling the process in the past was to simulate interval hot pressing using static pressing processes. This involved comparing the tool movement of a more readily accessible, variothermal thermoplastic pressing process with comparable constant heating and cooling rates. The focus was on classic, fabric-based organosheets. Building on this approach, the optimization of the interval hot pressing process for the co-consolidation of thermoplastic tapes will be carried out. This will simultaneously improve the process modeling by approximating real temperature curves recorded from the interval hot pressing process and temperature curves generated through simulation using highly dynamic temperature control. Temperature gradients that cannot be fully represented will be computationally adjusted to the target temperature curves using statistical analysis. The depicted temperature gradient is thus closer to the actual temperatures encountered in the process. Simulations are also used to consider the cavity change during tool heating. Compared to previous approaches, this should enable the design of a fully compensated tool for the co-consolidation of thermoplastic tape semi-finished products, eliminating the need for subsequent adjustment of the tool cavity through shimming. The investigations show that the material-related contribution to the cavity change can be accurately approximated by the experiments conducted. This creates the basis for a simpler process design for the co-consolidation of thermoplastic tape semi-finished products in interval hot pressing. A further benefit of the established press test is the straightforward testing and validation of sensors for the interval hot pressing process.
